WHO ARE WE?

Fair Travel Co. is a group expedition company specializing in sustainable, responsible, and ethical travel. As we explore our planet, our goal is to provide our ethical roamers with unique and memorable travel experiences that support the environment and local communities.

LETTER FROM MARY CATE

Fair Travel is more than an expedition company. It’s a revolution. A movement. One we can forge today and passionately scale into the future.

Anyone who tells you life is a straight line is lying (or not having very much fun). I’ve always felt a pull toward exploration; a curiosity for nature and behavior. Working in marine science my soul felt ignited. It gave me passion and energy. I learned it isn’t enough to simply observe and put research in a box. It’s important to ask, “Why?” And it’s important to take the next step.

But around 2013, I also needed a roof…which catapulted me into another world where both my creativity and analytical mind could play: demand generation for Silicon Valley startups. I learned how to make big ideas become reality. To surpass the giants with a driven team of like-minded enthusiasts.

In both roles, I felt the pull toward the other. I also felt a pull toward the Jesuit values that influenced my upbringing. I began craving a world where the ones modeled for me could crash and collide into a single way of life.

Fair Travel is a blending of those worlds. It’s a vision for our planet. One where business has purpose, not just a bottom line. Where we challenge our impulses, forging ethical practices as second nature. One where we can all explore and thrive.

When you travel with us, you’re expressing your values and you’re facilitating solutions to large scale environmental challenges. Without any extra effort. Just as it should be.

I feel invigorated by what we might accomplish, together!

Kindly Yours,

Mary Cate Bernal

OUR CODE

  • Your experience should be yours: unique and authentic. Get ready to explore new places and immerse yourself in new cultures.

We strive to curate expeditions that break the common “touristy” mold. We’ll help you connect with your destination, not spend your hard-earned dollars on kitschy souvenirs and the same photo op millions have taken before you.

Fair Travel is travel the way it should be: a real adventure.

  • We evaluate each expedition against our sustainability and ethics framework.

We believe sustainable travel takes full account of current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities.

  • Let’s learn together. We rely on scientific research to curate world class expeditions. Whether it’s evaluating the ethics of animal encounters, the best way to neutralize our carbon footprint, successful recipes for community action, or that information we once held as truth is no longer valid, scientific exploration is at our core.

It helps us inform our community of ethical roamers and helps us better our own practices day-in and day-out.

  • We believe that rather than exploit communities, businesses should be an integral part of their communities.

That’s why we’ve voluntarily organized as a Benefit Corporation (B Corp) in the State of California, USA. As such, we’ve taken on a legal obligation to support the environment and the communities we explore.

  • Close your eyes. Imagine a moment where your mind clears, you feel grounded, centered…you. You are one with everything around you. Your body is simultaneously calm and elated. Anything is possible.

We don’t have a perfect word for this experience in English, but other languages do. Traditional Chinese medicine uses the word Qi (or chi). Pixar Animation Studios has alluded to it as ‘soul.‘ A more modern term that’s gaining traction is “flow state.”

No matter what you call it, we hope to curate opportunities for you to experience this phenomenon for yourself.

  • We’re told buying products shapes ones identity and delivers happiness. But study after study shows that happiness actually comes when we have gratitude for what we already have, mindfully care and maintain what we’re grateful for, and enjoy both the anticipation, activity, and memory of an experience: like a trip.

We’ve moved beyond capitalism to hyper-consumerism: purchasing goods well and above what we need. It causes pollution, resource depletion, low quality, and poor labor standards.

Conscious consumerism gives us the opportunity to engage in the economy with more awareness of how our consumption impacts society and the planet at large.

We aim to supply you with what you really need, made in a way that’s both ethical and sustainable. And if you don’t need it? Don’t buy it! It’s that simple!

  • Rather than focusing solely on profit, we believe businesses should equally value their people (those they employ, those they serve, those they encounter) and the planet.

    • People: People matter. We aspire to build lasting relationships with the communities we visit, benefiting them as much as possible. We equally value and care for our customers (aka ethical roamers). Like our founder’s grandfather always said of his own company, “Making friends is our business.”

    • Planet: We minimize our environmental impacts and invest in solutions to large scale environmental challenges.

    • Profit: We don’t agree that not-for-profits are the only vehicle for good. Every business should be a vehicle for the betterment of our communities.

We’re not the only ones building on this revolutionary idea. Seek out the B Corp logo for other businesses who feel the same!

GROUP EXPEDITIONS

Whether you have a companion in mind or are a solo traveller looking to meet fellow ethical roamers, we've got you covered!

Each expedition is an opportunity to immerse yourself in new experiences, seek a new way to look into the world, and connect deeper than the average tourist.

Your itinerary has been ethically crafted! All you have to do is show up, throw on your best pair of shades, and get ready to enjoy the moment.

Because group sizes are small (5-25 people) we get you to niche locations large tour buses can't. We also leave our destinations with less disruption, both environmentally and culturally.
