FAQ’s

“You do not travel if you are afraid of the unknown; you travel for the unknown, that reveals you with yourself. “ - Ella Maillart, Swiss Adventurer

That said…you may have questions about upcoming expeditions. We’ve collected commonly asked curiosities which might pique your interest. If you don’t find your answer, please contact us.

  • Travel that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities.

  • Nope! We love service, but there are many other ways to make an impact in the world. A portion of your booking cost is allocated to your expedition's core mission. No service work is required. Note: Some trips include opportunities to work with researchers and conservationists in the field. These will be clearly called out in your itinerary.

  • We created the 'FAIR TRAVEL CO. Ethical Evaluation' to select accommodations we feel do the most good in the community you are exploring. This is important because each region we visit is at a different stage on their journey to sustainability. We consider environmental certifications (like LEED, WELL, and BREAM), commitment to eco-friendly practices, and whether or not the venue is locally owned.

  • True carbon neutrality requires three strategies:

    1. Greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction

    2. Carbon Offsets

    3. Carbon Removal

At Fair Travel, we prioritize on No. 1 and No. 3.

Whenever possible we make choices to reduce or eliminate GHGs. For example, designing a cycling tour through the French countryside rather than a bus tour.

We believe in taking responsibility for our climate impact. Rather than offsetting CO2, we choose to remove it. From the moment you join your expedition, we calculate your carbon footprint (aka the greenhouse gas emissions from your adventure). In turn, we invest in innovative solutions that put an equivalent volume of CO2 back into carbon storage.

  • Your expedition includes all published activities, airport transfers at your destination, accommodations, and some meals. It does not include airfare to and from your tour location.

  • Expeditions are designed for a wide range of adult explorers (18+). Generally, expeditions appeal to individuals with an appreciation for our planet and a desire for unique, authentic experiences. Depending on the tour theme, expect to travel with roamers who likely share your trip interest, be it food, scuba, wildlife, etc.

Whether you have companions in mind or are a solo traveller looking to meet fellow ethical roamers, we've got you covered!

Each expedition is an opportunity to immerse yourself in new experiences, seek a new way to look into the world, and connect deeper than the average tourist.

Alcohol is available. We ask that all groups are considerate and do not smoke or vape in the company of others.

  • Expeditions are binned into three sizes:

    • Intimate: 5-10 explorers

    • Moderate: 7-14 explorers

    • Respectable: 15-25 explorers

Because group sizes are small (5-25 people) we get you to niche locations large tour buses can't. We also leave our destinations with less disruption, both environmentally and culturally.
